Q&A with Shaquille Tillman: Inaugural BEAM Equity Award winner |
Shaquille Tillman knows firsthand what it’s like to be a caregiver. In 2022, Shaquille's father passed away from cancer, and regrettably, he was disappointed in the quality of care his father received during his hospitalization in their home state of South Carolina. This experience further ignited his passion for advocating for patients as a nurse and fostered an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
That dedication – along with his ability to ensure every individual within the organization feels valued and heard – was recognized by the Black Employee for Advancement and Mentorship Through Empowerment Affiliation and Membership (BEAM TEAM) in February.
Tillman, a nursing patient care manager in the M6 unit at Stanford Health Care, won the inaugural BEAM Equity Award after multiple colleagues nominated him for his exceptional leadership skills and efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In this Q&A, we asked Tillman what fuels him in his daily work.
June is a special month for celebrating, reflecting, and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. At Stanford Health Care, the Pride & Allies employee resource group (ERG) leads these efforts, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and unity through various activities and initiatives.
Throughout June, the Pride & Allies ERG partners with Facilities Services & Planning (FS&P) to bring the Stanford Health Care campus to life with colorful Pride-themed decorations. These include photo backdrops celebrating Stanford’s prestigious recognition from the Human Rights Campaign for exceptional LGBTQ+ care. Staff can also use new Pride-themed virtual backgrounds, promoting inclusivity in virtual meetings.
A standout event is the annual ice cream social at the 500 Pasteur rooftop garden and other locations, offering a relaxed setting for staff to connect and celebrate. Another major highlight is the San Francisco Pride Parade, where Stanford Medicine showcases its support for the LGBTQ+ community.
