Technology and Digital Solutions Internships
Join us at the forefront of technology and medicine
At Stanford Health Care, we're driven each day by our mission to heal humanity through science and compassion, one patient at a time. Our Technology and Digital Solutions (TDS) group has pioneered innovations in research, education, and healthcare delivery consistent with our Silicon Valley roots. We’ve also undertaken ambitious initiatives involving AI, machine learning, and data management. When you join us as an intern, you'll become a part of this legacy of leading-edge, coordinated, and compassionate care. You’ll gain valuable experience in the IT field and gain exposure to an invigorating business environment that includes interacting with IT senior executives.
Each Summer, we welcome 10-15 interns to join one of our world-renowned technology teams to contribute to solution development for Stanford Health Care and Stanford Medicine. Opportunities differ each year, spanning eight subject areas:
Work as part of a team to identify and plan opportunities for improving our clinical systems
Business and Financial Systems
Use the Agile Development Process to optimize employee-facing systems like ServiceNow
Clinical Business Analytics
Analyze usage patterns, user satisfaction, interviews, and surveys to improve solution effectiveness
Software Design and Development
Act as a full-stack, front-end, or back-end developer for our uniquely Stanford MyHealth app and other software
Help us train our employees in data security and fortify our systems and devices
Network and Storage Engineering
Act as a systems and storage engineer to script and automate monitoring tools
Work on biomedical engineering systems implementation, preventive maintenance, and compliance requirements
Research and Development and Clinical Informatics
Analyze and ideate with us to develop tools, metrics, and data visualizations for clinical research
Summer 2021 dates will be added here once they are finalized. Generally, you can expect the following timing:

Phone Screens: January and February
Virtual Interviews: March
Selections Made: March
Internship Begins: Late May/Early June
Application We post one central application for internship opportunities. Applicants must fill out the application and attach their resume. Letters of recommendation and transcripts are not required Phone Screen
Applicants are selected for phone screens based on their application. Our intern program team conducts phone screens to clarify points on your resume, confirm your availability for the summer, and answer questions from you.
The intern program team recommends you to a department/project that they believe is a good match Interviews Department leaders conduct interviews virtually with the top 2-3 candidates recommended for their position based on the application and phone screen. We use behavioral interview questions. Following the interviews, final selections are made.
What We Look For: Technical Skills
Each of our opportunities requires specific skills, which we'll include in the job posting when it is live. In general, we look for:
Experience with windows, mac os, and active director
Knowledge of REST APIs and web service development frameworks
Basic database design skills (SQL Server), SQL development, webform or report development (Crystal Reports, SAP BusinessObjects, Qlik, etc.)
Knowledge of technolgy product management
What We Look For: Behavioral Skills
We believe that technical skils are important, but behavioral skills are differentiators. This includes our interns. When we read your resume, we look for evidence of:
Professional written and oral communication
Adaptability to quickly changing priorities
Strong problem-solving skills using qualitative and quantitative data
Detail orientation and organized work approach
Confidence in raising thoughtful ideas
